Behavior Changes Tied to Lower Costs

UM has partnered with the 300-member National Business Group on Health to work on warehousing and analysis on data the group's companies feed into the Employer Measures of Productivity, Absence and Quality database.

As more than 4,000 businesses add information, Edington said, UM analyzes it and shows data allowing businesses to evaluate internal benefit programs and validate improvement through external benchmarks.

Having reports in hand from a third party like UM helps administrators of these programs gain senior management support by justifying plan cost and pointing to their effectiveness.

Some of the contributors to the database include Honeywell, General Motors, PepsiCo, FedEx and Coors, to name a few.

General Electric
"Employers are looking for ways to gather, track, and analyze data related to disability and employee absences and to adopt measures to determine the impact and effectiveness of their programs," states Marybeth Stevens, Leader, Health Care Administration and Benefits Delivery for General Electric US Employee Services.

"They are looking to determine where they have been successful in reducing incidents and where they have the opportunity to improve. Ultimately, they are seeking the means to benchmark results both internally, from year-to-year or division-to-division, and externally, while comparing their experience to other companies. I believe EMPAQ® is one of the most significant undertakings in recent years, with potential to positively and powerfully influence the health of individuals and companies.

"As the delivery leader for the Health Care Administration and Benefits Delivery at General Electric, my team fully supports EMPAQ®. We believe that it is essential to have credible, industry-wide standardized measures with which to benchmark our results. Through EMPAQ®, we believe employers will be able to drive the productivity equation from the standpoint of both internal and external benchmarking."
